If you didn't already know, I am David, a 71-year-old British expat living in Bosnia and Herzegovina, publishing “Coffee and Rakija” a Digital Magazine about my life and experiences in a rural village in North-West Bosnia and Herzegovina. I’ll be giving you a unique look, through the eyes of an immigrant (me), of this much misunderstood country. My goal is to replace the many negative perceptions of both the country and its people, that you’ll be served by international media outlets. Thank you so much for dropping by
The Backgrounder
I’ve been posting here on Coffee and Rakija for a long time now, showing up each Wednesday or Sunday with either a text post, vlog or podcast episode.
I have never really taken a break from posting here since I started some 3 years ago.
Why?
Well basically I’ve always sort of been worried that not showing up, you might just not bother checking for new content anymore, and ultimately delete yourself (unsubscribe) from my email list.
2024 so far, for me at least, won’t be going down in my memory as one of the best years I have ever had.
Starting in January with a health issue, (that’s still dragging on at the moment), to more than my fair share of attendances at funerals, and the (for me at least) incessantly hot weather, it’s been a struggle at times.
That’s not to say everything has had a tinge of negativity, far from it.
I really do still love living here. At times I actually pinch myself, at how my life’s journey has made it this far. I am truly fortunate. Back during the 30 years I was a professional soldier there was an attitude that you “made your own luck”. I think that might ring true, at least for me.
Everyday has some degree of adventure.
Your feedback means the world to me. I genuinely enjoy reading and responding to your comments, as it keeps the conversation alive. If you found this post valuable, hitting the 🧡 or sharing it helps it reach more readers. Thank you for your support!
The Substance
I’m taking a Summer Break.
Tamara and I will be spending the period 22 August to 1st September in the small village of Barbat, very close to the town of Rab, on the Island of Rab (Otok Rab).
A part of Tamara’s family hail from the island and the place means a lot to her (as well as me).
The aim while we are there is to just chill, explore, enjoy some Mediterranean diet, read and recharge. Maybe listen to some podcasts? Any recommendations would be appreciated.
So, there will be a pause, from the 12th of August in posting.
I am not planning on taking my laptop with me to Rab, just my phone. I am not sure yet if I should delete the Substack app. So maybe my presence on Notes might be “sketchy”.
I do plan to give you an update on how my Croatian break went, sometime after settling back on return to the village. Croatia IS different from Bosnia and Herzgovina, trust me.
Stay safe where ever you are reading this in the world.
BTW have you added your location on my listener map yet?
Until the 4th of September then …….. maybe browse the Archive 😀
A well deserved holiday and Rab is beautiful. Buon viaggio!
Have a good break. Just started reading Rory Stuart’s book Politics on the Edge (my book group’s summer read). To early to comment on it yet.
