It's worrying. Quality journalism worldwide is being eroded and is becoming a rarity. It is the cornerstone of democracy. It saddens my heart to hear stuff like this 😔
Martine, I think we have lived through a time where those healthy pillars of journalism have been sold out by capitalism. After all, being criticised and exposed, both politically and business wise isn't tolerated anymore. How we redress this will be exceedingly difficult and SLOW
The local language versions have gone for this region. I dont think many Balkan residents would even right click on their desktops to get the auto translations. Sad Sad Sad.
I have read Al Jazeera online in UK as part of my daily world news intake. And as you say David it offers a different perspective on the increasingly narrow news feeds. I also read the Reuters newswire feed that offers direct reports of issues as they arise. The mainstreams are of little interest anymore and TV news is the worst of all.

That's devastating to hear. Quality media are shutting down or in trouble left and right, charlatans are thriving.
Catastrophic without a doubt. Not a chance that something healthy fills this vacuum. Not a great time thats for sure
Picked up on the story on my blog (in German). Linked to your podcast as well, ofc. https://balkanstories.net/2025/07/14/al-jazeera-balkans-schweigt-fur-immer/
Can the English language version be translated automatically or is there an online version in local languages ?

Dai, for the Balkans this is a real step backwards. I'm at a bit of a loss in suggesting a way ahead.
