The Sunday Sip.
A Weekly Brew from Coffee and Rakija.
I’m David. The Sunday Sip, is a weekly newsletter about my life and experiences in a rural village in North-West Bosnia and Herzegovina. I’ll be giving you a unique look, through the eyes of an immigrant (me), of this much misunderstood country. My goal is to replace the many negative perceptions of both the country and its people, that you’ll be served by international media outlets. Thank you so much for dropping by.
The Update.
Not long ago, I posted a video on my YouTube channel discussing the current situation in Bosnia. While I usually focus on the positives, because there are many, I felt it was only right to also acknowledge the challenges. Of course, Bosnia isn’t the only place facing difficulties. My homeland, the UK, is going through its own turmoil, as is the US. Still, my connection to Bosnia remains strong, and I have no plans to leave, no matter how tough things get.
The Downside of Online Conversations
What I had hoped would spark respectful dialogue, instead turned into something else entirely. The comments section became a battlefield, with negativity overshadowing the message I wanted to share. It was disheartening to see my channel, which I’ve worked so hard to keep a space for positive storytelling, become overrun with hostility. In the end, I made the difficult decision to disable comments. Oddly enough, it was a relief.
Stepping Away from Social Media
As part of this shift, I’ve started to detach from traditional social media platforms. Facebook and Instagram have not played a role in my daily life.
Even YouTube has me questioning whether it’s still a “social” platform.
Instead, I’ve found more satisfaction in spaces like here on Substack where I can share my thoughts through writing and podcasting in a way that feels more genuine.
A More Minimal Digital Life
I’ve also taken steps to simplify my phone usage. By installing a minimalist app that blocks the Chrome browser, I’ve freed myself from the constant urge to stay updated. And you know what? I don’t miss it.
While Tamara still enjoys scrolling Instagram, I’m finding real joy in the quiet.
Final Thoughts
If you’re feeling overwhelmed by digital noise, then maybe disconnecting, even just a little, might be the break you need. And if something’s really urgent, well, there’s always the good old-fashioned phone call isn’t there?
As I sit here with my builder’s tea, I just want to say thank you for reading.

The Latest “Personal Anecdotal” Baby Boomer in Bosnia Podcast.
Welcome to my personal storytelling podcast, A Baby Boomer in Bosnia. This isn’t your typical heavily produced show with polished editing and soundscapes. Instead, it’s just me, sometimes with my wife, Tamara, talking into a microphone, sharing my experiences of living in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Whether you’re in the kitchen, driving your kids to school, working out at the gym, or simply looking for something informative yet entertaining, I hope this podcast becomes part of your routine.
The Food
Tamara shows The Art of Sun Drying Tomatoes.
