From Grapes to Rakija

A Taste of Summer in Bosnia

Čardačani, Northern Bosnia, another scorcher today, 30°C+ in the shade, so I’m hiding just outside my little office here in the village, surrounded by the fruits of summer.

Our grapes are coming along beautifully, some are already turning that deep, dark purple. We’ll eat them fresh, turn some into juice, and if Tamara has her way, there’ll be a batch of young wine brewing soon.

Sweet, strong, and… let’s just say, it can deliver a monumental headache if you’re not careful!

🍇 Up on the hill, the rest of our fruit is thriving, pears, plums (šliva) ready for rakija-making later in the autumn, apples by the bucketload, and even mušmula, the old English medlar fruit that was once a medieval delicacy.

Bosnia village life. Life here isn’t just about the views, it’s about these simple, seasonal pleasures. I’ll bring you along when rakija season starts in late October, so you can see the whole process for yourself.
